A RESOLUTION
Recognizing October 10, 2023, as "Taiwan National Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Taiwanese culture is derived from many influences,
including Aboriginal peoples, Chinese immigrants, western
colonial rule, Chinese governance, Japanese rule and
westernization since World War II; and
WHEREAS, "Taiwan National Day," also known as "Double Ten
Day," reflects Taiwan's multicultural history; and
WHEREAS, The day commemorates the beginning of the Wuchang
Uprising in China on October 10, 1911; and
WHEREAS, The Wuchang Uprising led to the Xinhai Revolution
and an end to the two millennia of imperial rule; and
WHEREAS, Prior to the uprising, the Qing Dynasty forced
native Taiwanese people out of their homeland; and
WHEREAS, Despite making up 2.3% of the Taiwanese population
today, native Taiwanese people have left an indelible mark on
Taiwanese culture; and
WHEREAS, Taiwan's diverse population is composed of four

ethnic groups: Aboriginal peoples, two groups of Taiwanese, the
Hoklo and the Hakka, and individuals who emigrated from mainland
China in the mid-1940s; and
WHEREAS, Their influences are displayed in Taiwan's many
languages, dialects, religions and cultural and artistic
expressions; and
WHEREAS, In 2021, there were more than 374,000 Taiwanese
individuals living in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Both abroad and at home, "Taiwan National Day" is
recognized as a celebration of Taiwan's multicultural identity;
and
WHEREAS, Celebrations of "Taiwan National Day" begin with the
raising of the flag of the Republic of China and singing of the
National Anthem, followed by displays by uniformed servicemen,
parades, an air show and performances of Taiwanese and Chinese
culture; and
WHEREAS, The events culminate in a grand fireworks display
accompanied by live music performances by Taiwanese artists; and
WHEREAS, Foreign ambassadors and dignitaries are also invited
to attend these celebrations honoring Taiwan's history and
multicultural identity; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
10, 2023, as "Taiwan National Day" in Pennsylvania.
