A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of May 2023 as "Nurses Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are many types of nurses, including, but not
limited to, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and
advanced practice nurses which include certified nurse midwives,
certified registered nurse practitioners, certified nurse
anesthetists and many more; and
WHEREAS, Serving as models of bravery for all of us, nurses
were on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting
their lives at risk to care for others and combat the novel
coronavirus; and
WHEREAS, A strong nursing workforce increases access to
health care, reduces health disparities along socioeconomic and
racial lines and improves the health and wellness of our
communities; and

WHEREAS, Florence Nightingale established the first
scientifically based nursing school in London and is considered
the founder of modern nursing; and
WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman, who led enslaved people to freedom
through the underground railroad in Pennsylvania, was a nurse;
and
WHEREAS, Other notable people throughout history who worked
in the nursing field include Mother Teresa, Dorothea Dix, Walt
Whitman, Hazel Johnson-Brown, Sylvia Mendez and Mary Eliza
Mahoney; and
WHEREAS, Safe levels of nursing staffing in our hospitals are
important for recruiting and retaining nurses and the health
outcomes of patients; and
WHEREAS, Nurses are needed in every school to ensure full
health care access for both children experiencing medical
emergencies and children with chronic medical conditions; and
WHEREAS, In order to unlock the full potential of nurses in
our health care system, barriers to practice as advanced
practice nurses must be eliminated; and
WHEREAS, There are many important groups that advocate for
nurses and their priorities in Pennsylvania, including, but not
limited to, Service Employees International Union, Pennsylvania
State Nurses Association, Pennsylvania Association of Staff
Nurses and Allied Professionals, Pennsylvania Association of
School Nurses and Practitioners, Southeastern Pennsylvania Area
Black Nurses Association, Nurses of Pennsylvania, the
Pennsylvania chapters of the National Association of Hispanic
Nurses, Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, Nursing
Foundation of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania affiliate of the
American College of Nurse-Midwives and the Pennsylvania

Association of Nurse Anesthetists; and
WHEREAS, Due to the unique skill sets developed through their
irreplaceable work, nurses are needed throughout society,
including on boards of organizations, in the highest levels of
government and as elected officials; and
WHEREAS, The key to a strong and healthy Commonwealth is a
robust and respected nursing workforce; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of May 2023 as "Nurses Month" in Pennsylvania.
