WHEREAS, In 1999, Mr. Leyland was hired by the Colorado
Rockies where he reached 1,000 wins on April 15; and
WHEREAS, He eventually returned to Detroit as manager and led
the Tigers to the World Series; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Leyland was recognized with the Manager
of the Year award for the third time in his career and also won
the Sporting News Manager of the Year Award for the American
League; and
WHEREAS, In 2011, Mr. Leyland would reach 1,500 wins, again
on April 15; and
WHEREAS, In 2012, he led Detroit to the World Series; and
WHEREAS, His 44 postseason wins are tied for fourth most in
Major League Baseball history; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leyland retired from managing following the 2013
season; and
WHEREAS, On April 15, 2016, he was named manager of Team USA
at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, where he led the team to its
first gold medal finish, making him the only manager to win a
World Series and a World Baseball Classic title; and
WHEREAS, On May 30, 2017, Mr. Leyland was inducted into the
Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in Detroit; and
WHEREAS, On December 3, 2023, he was elected to the National
Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leyland calls the Pittsburgh suburb of Thornburg
home, and it is where he has raised two children, Patrick and
Kellie, with his wife, Katie; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April
15, 2024, as "Jim Leyland Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
