A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of November 2024 as "Veterans and Military
Families Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, On November 11, 1918, the Great War (World War I)
officially ended when Germany and the Allied Nations signed an
armistice; and
WHEREAS, A year later, November 11 became known as "Armistice
Day" to honor those who fought and to celebrate the end of the
war; and
WHEREAS, On that day at 11 a.m., the hour the armistice had
been signed, two minutes of silence were held as an act of
respect; and
WHEREAS, In 1953, a motion was proposed to rename Armistice
Day as Veterans Day to honor those who served in all conflicts

and wars; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed into law a
bill designating November 11 as the official day of observance
of Veterans Day across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Every year on November 11, the United States comes
together to honor the veterans who have served and sacrificed
for their country; and
WHEREAS, To observe Veterans Day, a wreath is laid at the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 11 a.m. followed by a parade of
the colors by veterans' organizations in what is known as the
Veterans Day National Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, Communities across the country also commemorate
Veterans Day with parades and other local celebrations to honor
our veterans; and
WHEREAS, Veterans Day serves as both a way to teach and
remember United States history and a celebration of patriotism;
and
WHEREAS, Veterans have sacrificed their livelihoods and
families and have endangered themselves to protect others from
oppression; and
WHEREAS, Veterans utilize the skills learned from their time
in the military, such as discipline and leadership, and
integrate them into their communities for younger generations to
model; and
WHEREAS, As of 2022, Pennsylvania has the fourth-highest
veteran population; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs
assists veterans of this Commonwealth by providing information
on job opportunities, tax exemptions and mental health services;
and

WHEREAS, Because 7 out of 100 veterans will suffer from post-
traumatic stress disorder in their lifetime, it is increasingly
crucial to make mental health resources available to veterans;
and
WHEREAS, November 11 encourages us to take the time to
acknowledge the sacrifices that veterans make every day; and
WHEREAS, Nationally, "Veterans and Military Families Month"
is historically recognized in November to honor those who served
and the families that support them; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives must honor the
sacrifices made by our veterans to protect our country;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of November 2024 as "Veterans and Military Families Month"
in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
