A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of September 2024 as "Suicide Prevention
Awareness Month" and September 10, 2024, as "World Suicide
Prevention Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, More than 700,000 people around the world die by
suicide each year; and
WHEREAS, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
estimates that there were 1.6 million suicide attempts in the
United States in 2022; and
WHEREAS, After a decline in 2019 and 2021, suicide rates in
the United States have seen two years of increases; and
WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, suicide accounted for 49,449 deaths in 2022, a 2.6%
increase over the previous year; and
WHEREAS, Suicide is the eleventh-leading cause of death in
the United States and the second-leading cause of death for
those 10 to 14 years of age; and

WHEREAS, Stigma surrounding mental health and suicide
prevents many individuals who are contemplating suicide from
seeking and receiving appropriate treatment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of September 2024 as "Suicide Prevention Awareness Month"
and September 10, 2024, as "World Suicide Prevention Day" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
residents of this Commonwealth to provide support for those in
need.
